tucson rodeo: la fiesta de los vaqueros

tucson is the wild west and no matter how much people try to modernize it, it's still a frontier town. the rivers are dried up, there are coyotes and javelina that live in town, cactus everywhere, and the five Cs are what keep it going (cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, & copper). so it's no surprise that for 89 years tucson has been home to one of the top rodeo events in the country. the tucson rodeo, or as we like to call it, la fiesta de los vaqueros, is a big deal in tucson. so much so that students don't get president's day off from school, instead they have a rodeo break; 2 days off at the end of the week to participate in the rodeo. it's a week long affair with events for kids as well as professionals. participants compete all week with the hopes of qualifying for the finals on sunday. we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the final day of the rodeo, and it was quite a show!

events included: bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronco riding, tie down roping, team roping, women's barrel racing, and of course, bull riding.
