2015 -- week 2 of #projectlife -- the international dateline

i have traveled to some pretty far off places, but i've never had the pleasure of crossing the international dateline until this trip. it's super weird. flying west takes 20ish hours from start to finish, but in calendar/clock time it takes two days. meanwhile, flying east takes ~48 hours, but you get to relive the same day twice. in our case it was january 5, 2015. the first january 5th was spent exploring narita, japan, eating our faces off, while the second, after a 12 hour flight, was spent at LAX reading, catching up on email, and being annoyed that we weren't home with the kittenz.
side note: can someone please explain to me how the international dateline works? i've spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, but it's just one of those things i can't wrap my brain around. maybe having a globe would help?
